good saturday morning. 7am and the waves look clean on the north shore. 3′ and fun so i’m out of here…. town is small in the knee high range but north shore is the call… the winds backed off but it’s still raining. have a nice day….
just downloaded the photos from yesterday. gosh, this cooler looks full of the same fish we caught 4 days ago. but it’s not. when i first started diving, i took my small cooler and went home with one fish if i was lucky. throughout the years, i learned how certain fish act and how to hunt them. almost every fish is different so there are tricks to lure them in. see that big blue uhu? the uhu’s in town are pretty smart so it’s kind of hard to catch them. this is how i caught this one. it was like 35′ deep so i waited for him to go behind a rock or in a cave and then i dove down on him. i couldn’t see him but as i was going down, he came out of the cave and looked at me. he was tripping out and so was i because he turned to the side and gave me the perfect head shot. i think he was drunk or something because that was too easy….
how did i catch this big kumu? i saw a pile of fish in 15′ deep water. i dove down in the middle and was thinking in my head what shawn told me. he said that he doesn’t see the kumu’s when he first goes down but they just come out of nowhere if you wait. i was waiting patiently on the bottom for about a minute singing “silent night’ in my head. that’s just one of songs i sing in my head while diving. haha. anyway, there were so many fish swimming around me but i just kept on waiting because i could have picked off any fish at any time. just as i was running out of air, i seen this big red kumu swimming up to me. maybe he thought i was santa? he turned 5′ away and i shot him right in the body. i usually aim for the head but i didn’t want to take any chance on losing on of the biggest kumu’s i’ve ever speared so i shot him in the body. grabbed him, and went back to my boat singing “jingle bells”…. i was done for the day…. merry christmas… kind of late but i’m still in the christmas spirit…..[:?????$B!x(B???:]
my brother took his fish, mike took his, we gave some away, and this is the rest for my dinner this week….
Hawaiian Fishing Tales….
Rainy Windy Days = Diving Days….
good evening, the waves have been terrible but the waters been pretty clean. there are small craft advisories everyday so i take my small craft out in the ocean. people might think we’re nuts but it’s just like surfing during a typhoon i guess. i didn’t see any other boat in the ocean today so we were the only crazy guys. went diving with my brother and mike and caught a cooler of good fish. my gun? magic…. this is photos from the other day i went diving. when i get the chance, i will download the photo from today….
mike and i needed some fish for a christmas parties so we went to find some…. this is pretty good for 2 guys…
on the left side are uhu’s. and on the right are kumu’s and munu’s. and on the bottom are some mempachi’s….. all good!!!
these are the fish i look for when diving. if you haven’t eaten one before, your missing out. one fish will go for $50 in a chinese restaurant. more than lobster….
want to know how bad the weather’s been in hawaii? this is a photo outside my house this afternoon. yes, day time. it’s been like this forever. dark, windy, and rainy….
**oh, seen a pod of dolphins today. i was swimming back to my boat to put a fish in the cooler and 30 or so dolphins swam right by me. i made my dolphin noises and was swimming with them for a while. bummer i didn’t have my camera but it was pretty cool….
**as for the waves, the north shore cleaned up this evening. there were 20 guys surfing pipe/backdoor and about 25 guys surfing lani’s. the waves were 3-4′ and looking good…. town had some small ones too. it’s still windy and freaking freezing cold. i wore a full suit diving today and was still cold. my feet are still frozen. feels like winter in japan. hope we get our sunny hot days back but it looks like it won’t happen till next year. i going to surf the north shore with my full suit tomorrow.[:???:][:???:][:???:] have a safe evening and a good night…..[:???:][:???:][:???:]
Teach a Man to Fish…..
good morning. 6:40am once again, windy, rainy, and small waves. same as yesterday. nobody out at bowls, rockpiles, lani’s, or pipe. there are thousands of surfers on the island and i wonder what everybody is doing? playing backgammon? chess? lucky me, i have so many hobbies so waves or no waves, i’m happy… have a nice day….
Give a man a fish, feed him for a day. Teach a man to fish, feed him for a lifetime.
**just wanted to thank the many many people who taught me how to fish and dive throughout all these years. it’s keeping me healthy and keeping my mind from going crazy. sashimi’s on me…. this was the other day’s catch. today’s coming later…. yeah, the waves suck so i’m going diving….
**and speaking of fish. check out this humphead parrotfish. some populations of this south pacific fish are thought to have gone extinct. these big boys live really long but reproduce slowly. so next time you see one in the water, think before you spear it. it might be the last one you’ll see….
