i wake up, check out the surf, felt like diving, woke up the kids, meet them at Mayuki, and we go dive. i was so excited, but the kids were even more excited. they are hooked on diving and i’m super happy that they are living a healthy life in the ocean.
we pass bowls and the waves look so fun. BUT, surfing is not on anybody’s mind, diving is.
they are getting better and better. more prepared and prepared. usually one of them would forget a glove, a mask, or something. but today, they were all prepared. Seth Moniz, Kylen Yamakawa, and Joshua Moniz. 3 awesome kids! all world known surfers with great attitudes.
i watch the kids dive just laughing through my snorkel. i see them chasing fish like a soccer player chasing the ball. i always tell them to wait for the fish but instead, they attack. i see the fish run away and swim into a hole. then i go down, look in the hole, and spear it. down 35′, i can hear them saying “omg! ahhh! shit!!!” i’m just laughing out loud. then i tell Seth that there is one more fish in the hole, he goes down, relaxes, and shoots the fish right in the head! the best shot you can ever imagine! this is the biggest “munu” of his life and i’m sure there will be bigger ones to come. i got 2 big ones out of the same hole so i marked it on my GPS and named it “SETHMUNU.” we shall be back!
if you free dive in hawaii, you will know that this is one of the most prized fish you can catch. let alone see one, trying to spear one is a challenge. very smart and very deep.
every single time in the ocean, these kids are learning and applying their knowledge to bettering themselves. i was watching them with a big smile just enjoying their progress. it takes years and years to master free diving and they have a really early start. each fish has different behaviors and when you can figure that out, spearing them is easy.
the water was really dirty everywhere so we just looked for a small patch of clear water and jumped in. total success!
free diving will form an unbreakable friendship. each life in the water depends on the other. they watch each other, they dive safe, and they are the best of friends. these kids are leaving this week for the whole summer. contests back to back in california along with an indonesia boat trip. they are living a life i’ve been living for the past 25 years and this is the day i was waiting for. good job boys! go travel and show the world the hawaiian aloha spirit! surf hard, be humble, dive hard, and be smart. you guys are all one step ahead of the competition. i’ll be cheering you on!
