Hey, ever heard the song “Goodnight and Goodmorning” by Cecilio and Kapono? well, it was almost 30 years ago when “us boys” drinking out cheap mister brau beers, and “us girls” drinking their cheap “tickled pink” wine. we were in our teens and we’d go drinking at sandy beach, salt flats, kuliouou park, or mariner’s ridge. we’d all pile into my volkswagon squareback all drunk and having a blast. those were the good old days. that song stuck in my mind since then and i know that song word by word.
fast forward 30 years. i call my high school buddies, we gather with our beers and poke, and we meet at the hilton hawaiian village. i told russ and john that even though they didn’t show up, i was going there by myself because i love C & K and i wasn’t going to miss this for anything!!!! all i needed was a cheap beer, a towel to lie down on the sand gazing at the stars, and the music that will bring back all the memories.
they sang:
GOOD TIMES TOGETHER
ABOUT YOU
YOU AND ME
SUMMER LADY
SAILIN
HIGHWAY IN THE SUN
LIFETIME PARTY
and many more.
the concert was at the hilton hawaiian village hotel. the tickets were $200 for front row seats, and $38 for the back row seats.
till this day, i don’t think i ever paid to enter a concert because i didn’t have enough money. when they use to play at the waikiki shell, we use to barbecue at kapiolani park, and jump over the fence after a few beers. some of us got caught, some didn’t. we where kids so it was ok. so for this concert, we walked to the fence, we put down our coolers, grabbed some beers, and watched from the side. free is best! haha. just like high school!
then right as they were singing “Goodnight and Goodmorning” the fireworks show started. it was freakin amazing!!!
free concert under the stars and cool trade winds at the hilton hawaiian village. and guess what? they are playing again tonight. yes, it’s 1am, i’m tipsy, i’m happy, and i’m going to sleep with the song “HIGHWAY IN THE SUN” in my mind. i might be same place same time tonight. i feel like i’m living in a dream. goodnight… and good morning….
