been hearing about the waves back home. big waves on the north shore, still epic waves on the south. contest season started, boys going off, and another shark attack. poor 10 year old kid gets attacked in makaha. more wild news world wide but for me, the waves and news is the farthest thing on my mind. all i can think about is to enjoy every single minute of my life where ever i go, and where ever i end.

took a walk this morning into the streets. just enjoying the fresh air, culture, people, and food. mexico is such an amazing place! but when i get back to hawaii, i won’t eat a taco or burrito for 6 months. i had too many tortillas and beans already. haha.

morning breakfast call for locals.

i was waiting at the bus station to get a bus to the airport this morning. i saw the funniest thing. a guy was painting the counter where everybody was going to buy tickets. there was wet paint everywhere! the guy before me had it all over his pants and hands. if this was america, i could see a lawsuit for sure. one worker will get fired, and one customer will be rich. but no, not here in mexico.
well, the day has come. going to jump on an airplane to another country where time stands still. pretty much going back to the past. no mcdonalds, no wall marts, no 7/11’s, no phone service for me, and no internet. heard there is one place to get connected but not to sure if i’ll go there or not. kind of want to take the next few days to go back 50 years in time. enjoy the culture, enjoy the food, and enjoy the people. it’s kind of a once in a lifetime experience for me because i know things will change there really fast. and now is the time and only time to get it as pure as it gets. see you in a few days!
Back to the Future or Back to the Past?
Would you die for Avocado?

there are huge avocado trees in the mountains if you know where to look. i use to go with my grandma and grandpa when i was a little kid. we use to go into the mountains and pick the avocados that fall off the tree. then my grandma would prepare all kinds of dishes. so seeing avocados in the trees till this day makes me remember those days.

when i say they are high up there, i mean high up there. so high that if you fall, you’re dead.

i tried to climb one. Mr. and Mrs. Iwata-san scolded me just like how my grandma and grandpa use to. my grandma use to tell me not to do things and i would do them anyway. haha.

i’m a lot older now and i still don’t listen. i climbed up the tree and tried my best. but, couldn’t reach the delicious avocados. bummer. sorry Mr. and Mrs. Iwata-san for not listening. i actually went back and tried again. haha.
Cenote Free Diving

omg, i came to cancun expecting to be sitting on a resort beach, sipping a margarita, and watching girls in bikinis. little did i know, i’d be experiencing something i never even knew existed. what is a cenote? it’s a big natural pit or sinkhole. people didn’t know it even existed until a big hole sunk and beneath it was the purest groundwater you could ever find. i felt like i was in an alien world!!!

there are cenote’s everywhere. well not everywhere, only on this part of mexico. you won’t find anything like this in the world. driving up the long dirt road, pulling up to a big natural sinkhole, and being totally blown away. the water was so clean i couldn’t believe it.

then this is where it gets interesting. some holes go super deep, as deep as 40 meters or 120′. some holes go hundreds of meters back into dark caves. i don’t like dark caves so it was kind of terrifying for me.

you have one flashlight. if the battery dies, you die. there is no way you will be able to get back out. it’s like a giant dark maze and if you don’t remember how you get in, you won’t make it out. just the thought of that is terrifying!

then you have all these alien creatures! weird fish i never seen in my life.

yes, you can see the fear in my eyes. i tried to act all cool, but deep inside my mind, i was a little scared boy. one of the few times i wasn’t in control of my life. and guess what? i kind of liked that feeling. haha.

then i heard squeaking all over. felt things flying over my head. come to find out, the caves are infested with bats! omg, vampire blood sucking bats!!!!

and not only bats, freaky turtles too! what the heck????

then you find a spot where the sun finds a little hole and provides the most amazing spotlight. it was a trip! diving deep into the most clearest water in the world not knowing where the top is. and if you misjudge the top, you might come up and hit your head on the limestone. so dam freaky! did some deep dives and felt like i was in heaven.

forget the resort hotels, forget the margaritas, and forget the girls in bikinis. come to cancun and experience cenote’s. i traveled the world and thought i seen it all. this was something out of my wildest dreams and something i would recommend to anyone and everyone.
