i was thinking about where to go this year. mentawai’s been on my mind every year since i went there for the first time 13 years ago. hands down the best waves in the world. big barrels and very consistent. our go-naminori boat trip back in 2010 was amazing. the coolest group of people, and the best waves of our lives. and now after watching it again, i think i’m going to take a 10 day break, jump on a boat in the mentawai’s. this time i will try to time the swell and jump on a plane. i just want to get barreled and barreled and the mentawai’s is the best place for that.
ht’s doesn’t get any bigger, or any more perfect than this. just ask hayato maki getting ready to pull into one of the best waves of his life…

like i told you, there were surfers from all walks of life. kaori-chan is not only a JPSA grand champion surfer, she’s a free diver, and a very sweet girl…
ever seen a kneeboarder in the mentawai? i haven’t. tokura-san at the hole…
and not too many sup paddlers too. toda-san even got barreled!
if your on a boat with us, you will eat sashimi every night. i can pretty much guarantee that. the skin diver footage is awesome. see all the black stuff? that’s not dust on the lens, it’s freaking lots of fish!!!
and of course you need a great mix of people to keep it interesting.

Huge 20′ swell on Friday!!!! OMG!
Good morning 6:30am.
North shore 1-3′ and clean.
South shore waist high and bumpy.
South winds coming at 15mph later.
Clouds, sun, haze, rain, thunder, lightning. Unpredictable weather.
Going surfing anyway.

had another great day in the ocean. surfed 2 rounds before 11am and felt like i already had a fulfilled day. it was hot, the waves were glassy, and no crowd! it was another hot summer day in hawaii.
went to surf early morning with Miwa-san at bowls. there were only 3 other surfers out and we had the inside bowl to ourselves. had a great time surfing, talking, and laughing. when i first met Miwa-san a few years ago, we had little to talk about. but now, we can keep talking forever. and the top subject is how to enjoy life! surf and enjoy is the way to go and we both agree on that!
and i was stoked to see Miwa-san surfing so good on this trip. she caught a lot of waves and kept on smiling!
thank you Miwa-san for a wonderful time in hawaii. thank you for always translating my blogs. i’m so happy to have you a part of this wonderful surfing world. keep on surfing and i will see you again soon! hope you had a safe flight back to japan. aloha.
