Christopher Cross Sailing

there are a lot of broken surfboards happening everyday on the north shore. i’d estimate at least a thousand boards broken per season. here are just a few.

i was down at the harbor the other day when an man older walked up to me and asked “what’s your name?” i said “kirby.” he said “kirby fukunaga?” i said “yes.” he said “hey, i was your 7th grade wood shop teacher.” OMG, i was only 13 years old then and he still remembered me! that’s amazing. then all the flashbacks came in an instant. i remember sitting in the front row of my wood shop class (front row because i wouldn’t pay attention in the back so he put me up there). Mr. Takabayashi would teach our class and there would always be background music playing on the old speakers. every morning i’d walk in, “Sailing” by Christopher Cross would be playing. back then, i didn’t know the meaning for this song. but throughout the years, i listened to it over and over and it made me happy for some reason. and on all of the boat trips i go on ever since, i always play “Sailing” on my ipod. it makes me happy, makes me free, and makes me remember my days sitting in wood shop listening to that song. now Mr. Takabayashi is retired fulfilling his dream of owning a boat docked down at the harbor. i will be next and i’m sure we are both still listening to his amazing song from the 1970’s.

and on my outer island trip the other day, sailing was playing in my head as i watched the sunrise coming up as the baby whale was jumping up and down. it was freaking amazing!
listen to one of my all time favorite songs. it will make you smile, it will make you happy, and it will make you free!
“JUST A DREAM AND THE WIND WILL CARRY ME, AND SOON I WILL BE FREE!”
