Haleiwa Menehune Contest On!!
Niseko with Taro Tamai….
good morning. small waves in town but north shore is coming up. just talked to tony who’s out there already and said that solid 4′ sets are rolling in to sunset point. i’m going to check out some heats at the grom contest at haleiwa. see ya out there…
it was 12 years ago when tokura-san invited me with him and ohmi-san to snowboard at niseko in hokkaido. that’s when i met the legend snowboarder taro tamai. i remember getting ready at his house. he put a beacon around my neck. i asked him what that was for? he said, “in case of an avalanche”. huh??? so we take the lift up to the highest part of niseko. walk 15 minutes to the back side of the mountain. i looked down and wow!!! pure powder snow untouched.. it was the 4 of us and the whole mountain to ourselves. we took turns flying down and everybody was super stoked. the best snowboard experience of my life. then when we got to the bottom, i looked around and there was nothing in sight. we ended up walking in waist high deep powder snow for an hour getting back to the main road. my legs were killing me…. a great experience with the most experienced guy, taro-san….. this is tokura-san, taro-san, and me when we finally got to the road… thanks tokura-san, ohmi-san, and taro-san….
Hawaiian Fishing and Seafood Festival….
the hawaii fishing and seafood festival is happening tomorrow, oct. 12th at pier 38 from 9am to 4pm. kyle, cathy, and the hawaii skin diver tv crew will be down there. should be an awesome event….
oh my gosh, merlinda garma, the host of hawaii skin diver tv, and kimi werner, 2008 national spearfishing women’s champion will be down there too. i haven’t met either one but i’m pretty much die hard fans of both. i respect a host that attracts more than just fish. and i respect any girl that can hold her breath longer than me. now i’m going for sure. see you down there….
watched the finals of the HUYGA MIYAZAKI PRO today live on the internet. great surfing going down there in miyazaki. shota nakamura won the the WQS short board division….
the boys from hawaii shined. jason shibata getting 3rd in the longboard division. yes, i said longboard division. and 2nd in the shortboard division. from longboard to shortboard, jason was ripping…
kekoa uemura ripped every heat and ended up winning the longboard division. gosh, ever since kekoa went to japan to compete, he pretty much won everything he entered. now he’s pretty famous over there. that’s cool….
and last, wanted to congratulate nick mita on a great job as a MC for the contest. i think asp japan made a smart move having nick commentate the contest because the number of viewers watching probably doubled. great job to all the boys from hawaii…
**oh, wanted to thank yamamoto-san for letting me steal some of his photos from the asp website. well, he didn’t actually let me, i just did it. sorry yamamoto-san…. check out the rest of the photos/videos on ASPWORLDTOURJAPAN….
