Tow School @ UH-WCC

wow, today was the first time i went to the University of Hawaii Windward campus.  i couldn’t believe how beautiful it was!  can you imagine going to college in Hawaii on a campus like this?

today was my final class before i get fully certified for tow in surfing.  i didn’t even know you needed a license to do it.  not only does the driver of the jet ski need a license, the tow in surfer needs a license too.  if you don’t have one and get caught, the fine can be up to $1,000 and 30 days in jail.

the class was very informative and very important.  i learned so much today and i’m super grateful for all the knowledge passed down.  now i feel a little more comfortable and confident for the upcoming swells.  i’m totally legal!!!

i was here in class for 7 hours.  it was worth it because i heard the police is going to be very strict and enforce the tow in surfing laws this year.  now i can tow in foil without getting arrested!  i’m so happy!

The Better Wave with Coach Ben Aipa

Ben Aipa use to surf Bowls rights every single day.  i would see him out there for years and years.  we would talk about the past and he would still coach me till the end.  this is the last photo i have of him in the water.  so this is my treasure…

back in 1988, Ben coached me for years.  he was strict, and yet quiet.  he never yelled at me before but i remember being super nervous at times.  just his presence was huge.  i would paddle out to spots as he would wait on the beach watching everything.  i remember him always telling me to be aggressive.  he knew my level of surfing wasn’t close to the top surfers in Hawaii so if i wanted to win heats, i would have to get better waves then my competition.  and guess what?  it worked many times.  i would beat better surfers simply by getting better waves then them.  throughout the years, all i did was look for the best waves on any given day.  thank you Coach Ben!
