Lost and Found and Backout

omg, i don’t remember any summers in the past begin this calm. it’s usually windy trade winds all summer long. today was as calm as it gets. so calm that i had to get into the ocean! i was driving out towards diamond head and could see 100′ deep. i could see reef so deep, fish, turtles, and everything.

this is 90′ and i could see fish on the bottom. unbelievable! then i see a nice rock structure, and see 2 big objects moving slowly. OMG! GT! OMG! ULUA! easy 100lbs!!! i throw the anchor, grab my speargun, and jump in! my heart is beating so fast but it was my only chance. i take a couple of deep breaths and head down to the bottom. kept going down and felt forever. i hit the top of the cave, peak my head under, and it was gone??? omg! i wait for it to come home, kept on waiting, but i was already running out of breath. i did something that you aren’t supposed to do; look up. i see the 23′ Mayuki looking small like a fly. omg, i’m freaking deep! i start making my way up slowly, my mind is going full speed like i wasn’t going to make it. but i relax, close my eyes, and kept kicking up. i break the surface after 1 minute 20 seconds. it felt like an hour. i start to get dizzy, then i take my deep breaths again and regain control.

i look at my watch and it was 74′ or 22.5 meters. luckily the GT wasn’t home because if i speared it, i would be fighting it and probably wouldn’t have made it back up. no fish, but it’s ok because there will be another time.

ended up getting a nice size tako on another dive. tako poke time!

today was one of those days that is very rare. no wind and crystal clear water. one of the cleanest days ever. so clean that the 100′ bottom seems only 20′. i’ve been doing some 70-85′ dives recently and i’m feeling pretty dam good under there. i just can’t make the mistake of looking up ever again. that’s dangerous because no matter how calm you are, your inner mind is telling you “you better hurry and get your ass back up before something terrible happens.” it’s hard to stay calm. haha.

got back to my truck at 5pm. to was 33C! omg!

and on the way back to my car, i found a wallet. somebody must have dropped it. i open it up, look at the license. walked around yelling for “Andrew.” found him 5 minutes later. he was reaching in his pockets looking for something when i said “hey Andrew, did you lose something?” haha.
Fish Attack: Honolulu Hanauma Bay

we were surfing yesterday and i saw a black shadow. it was an Eagle Ray! how cool is that?

it feels like i’ve known Masamune-kun for a long time. it’s only been 3 years but this kid became a man in that time. smarter and smarter, and happier and happier.

so i take him into my world. first, i do my drop of 40′ to see if there are any big sharks hiding in the cave. no sharks today but lots of beautiful fish. i had my speargun ready and was going to take a shot at a fish, but i wasn’t in the mood to kill so i just left it as i found it.

i’m lying on the bottom looking up at Masamune-kun. i wave at him and tell him to dive down to me. he must have been thinking i’m crazy. haha.

seen this cool turtle sleeping in the cave.

as i was lying on the bottom checking out all the fish, these 2 beautiful fish swam near me. then all of a sudden, one of them attacked me! he actually bit my hand.

i was tripping out! it was the first time i got attacked by a fish! then the fish bit me again, then tried to bite my face through my mask. i was actually thinking of putting my spear in his head but decided to leave him alone. i guess he didn’t want me in his world today. so i go back up, tell Masamune-kun, “we better go dive somewhere else.”

then we hit another one of my secret spots. this one much shallower so perfect for this kid.

there are cool cracks, caves, and underwater obstacles. nice red fish looking good for dinner. he’s lucky i left my spear on the boat.

then seen this big grouper. i could have shot him too.

it’s so weird that fish know when they are being hunted. if i had my speargun, none of these fish would have swam right up to me. i had no speargun and was scratching the reef to see how close they would come in. some fish almost hitting my mask. i could have grabbed it with my hand!

then i see this beautiful cave. i go down and take a photo. all of a sudden, something scares the shit out of me!!!!

Masamune-kun came from the other side and freaked me out! haha!

can you believe this kid could be my future doctor? if he was in practice now, i’d want him to be my doctor because i trust this kid. we had such a wonderful day and on the way back to his hotel, he asked me “how do you dive so deep and stay under water for so long?” i told him “you just have to relax and go with the flow. with some practice, you can do it too.” another day speaking in english, and another day hanging out with my awesome kid friend. i’m sure in a few years he will be diving deeper than me.

my first love. oh yeah!
