it’s always scary going thru border check points in other countries. you hear the stories of extortion, bribery, and all kind of illegal activity. luckily we had a guide that took us thru this check point nearing the costa rica border unharmed.
and there it is! the gate to costa rica. one side of the street you’re in panama, one side of the street you’re in costa rica. pretty cool!
and you see the most interesting shops on the boarders. check out the las vegas bar in panama!
last night i went outside to take a photo of the moon with a $12,000 canon 400mm lens. freaking beautiful!!!
ok, if you ever scuba dive, you will know how uncomfortable it is underwater if you lose your air. my friend Satoko once took my regulator out of my mouth, and also took off my mask 100′ underwater and it was uncomfortable. i didn’t panic so i’m still alive. but 9 out of 10 divers will panic for sure. watch this video taken the other day in hawaii. this lady was video taping 2 guys illegally catching aquarium reef fish at 50′ deep. one of the guys got pissed off so he swam towards her and ripped her regulator out of her mouth. this is freaking crazy! he really could have killed her if she panicked. luckily she didn’t. but now this video is been seen by millions around the world. if that guy is caught, he is in super big trouble. attempted murder? he’s probably going to jail!

Fresh Katsuo Tataki in Hawaii
i woke up this morning and the waves were pretty much flat. plus, the water was still dirty from yesterday. my friend Brandon came to my house this morning and we decided to go fishing for a couple of hours. we passed bowls and it was hardly breaking. i don’t remember a summer day when the waves have been this small. there is supposed to be a big south swell starting thursday but until thursday, we will never know. we ended up surfing this afternoon and the waves were pretty fun. small but perfect conditions!
it wasn’t the best day for fishing because it was pretty rough. but my friend Derek always told me that the fish bite when it’s rough. he was right!
we circled the buoy and also did some passes in the open ocean. gosh, don’t you love my new fishing poles? i do.
my brother came along too. just a 2 hours trolling and we caught 2 fish. we were trying to get a big ono but no bites today. maybe tomorrow?
we were happy with one katsuo and one maguro. this is as fresh as you can get it.
i took the katsuo to my favorite izakaya in hawaii, they prepared it for us, and we had the best dinner ever! you can’t get katsuo any fresher than this! thank you to Manabu-san and the boys at Gaku for preparing the best katsuo tataki in hawaii! next time i catch a huge tuna, i’ll bring it to you! mahalos!
