Hawaii Skin Diver Surfer…

good morning. 5:30 am and it’s time for some sunrise surfing. no wind and clear skies so it’s going to be a beautiful day! see you in the water!!!

a colorful rainbow going over a colorful hospital. pretty dam cool!!!!

hey, did you know that there is only one place in hawaii that serves free gourmet shave ice? it’s so good that i can’t tell you where. gomenasai. last night, i ate this whole thing!!! soooo good!!!

the guy on the back row farthest to the right is Red Sea Adventure/Hawaii Skin Diver Producer Kyle Nakamoto. i met kyle surfing at big rights a while ago and even when the waves were going off, all we talked about was traveling and diving. we have a lot in common and that’s why it’s so easy for us to travel together. having kyle on this trip added the final touches to another great documented journey. the video he took is incredible, the barrel of his life was memorable, and the poke platters he made were indescribable. wow, that rhymes? haha…
kyle,
thanks so much for coming along on our trip. you worked really hard and everybody appreciates it. i don’t know if you know, but the video footage you took of the boys is probably the best footage ever for a japanese surf crew. i haven’t seen anything like it before and may probably never willl. thanks also for being patient and teaching the crew how to free dive. i’m not patient like you so nobody wants to ask me questions. haha. but your patience worked and it showed in everybody’s progress, including myself. and the poke and sashimi platter you made for us? oh my gosh!! since we started traveling together, i’d have to say that we have some incredible memories. the journey continues and i’m so excited to see what’s in store for the next years to come. thanks again and see you on our next destination!!!
by the way, thanks for inviting me for the dive today. i hardly turn down a dive but today i have too many things going on. i hope you guys are spearing big fish and can’t wait to see the photos. next time, i won’t say no!!!
talk to you later,
kirby

Cooking Tako or Octopus….

i was over at the hilton hawaiian village yesterday. it was pretty nice looking out from the lobby to the ocean. cool…. oh, wanted to thank the boys down there for letting me park my car right in front of the hotel. where ever i go, i feel like a vip member. gosh, it’s so good to have such awesome friends that take care of me. mahalo guys…

photos like this inspire me as a surfer and a photographer. i look at it and think to myself “wow, this is what you call art.” now all i have to do is go out and get one for myself. just give me some time….

everybody in the world has their own way of cooking tako. my way is pretty easy.

first. freeze the tako. for some reason, it turns out much softer after cooked.
second. defrost it and turn the head inside out and take out the brains.
third. pour a lot of salt all over to wash off the slime.
fourth. rinse it off.
fifth. heat a big pot on the stove. don’t put anything in.
sixth. throw the whole tako inside. the water from the tako will bring it to a light boil.
seventh. when the tako starts to boil, add in 2 cups of japanese sake, and 2 cups of mirin.
eight. cover it and cook on medium/low heat for 45 minutes. yes, i said 45 minutes. it’s called slow steaming.
ninth. take it out, cut it up, and enjoy the best tako of your life.
tenth. go dive and get another tako. please don’t ask me for one because tako is like gold to me.
try it, you’ll like it…
