Wish Upon a Star

i finally took the bait! all my friends telling me about their fishing stories, i figure i better go. it’s something i always wanted to do, just once. i tried twice before with no luck so i wasn’t really expecting the greatest. but all on my mind was “AHI FEVER!” i either get an ahi, or i get nothing.

we left at 4am and it was pitch dark. i used the stars to navigate the 19 miles out to sea. i have a gps but it is too bright and tiring on my eyes so i just pick a star and head for her. and looking out at the horizon, i seen the biggest, brightest, and longest shooting star ever! right there, i make my wish “please get us an ahi today.” it was then, i knew we were going to catch one.

we threw in the lines at 5:20am, and hooked up at 6:45am. it was that fast! since it was Isaiah’s first time trolling, he got the pole! we had no idea it was an ahi at first. but once we seen the huge fish near the boat, we started screaming and panic at the same time. most people lose the fish right here. not us.

pull the fish up and see more big ahi jumping out of the water. we tried a few more passes and figured it was time to take what we got and call it a day. it was still before 9am.

so stoked to fish with my nephew. i took Isaiah fishing for the very first time when he was like 5 years old. i still remember the feeling he had when he caught his first tiny fish. today was no different. the same feeling, the same kid, but bigger fish. good job Isaiah.

driving back was so peaceful. it rained but who cared? when you have a prized fish on the boat, nothing else matters.

then it was picture time. Brandon’s been my friend since high school. different schools, but same passion. to hunt, and to live happily.

i called Joshua and Micah last night to come fishing with us but they couldn’t. i’m sure they are regretting it big time. once again, good job Isaiah, congratulations on your first and probably not last, Big Tuna!
IMG_8326
and thank you Brandon for coming on such short notice. a memory we all shall never forget.

then it was back to my house to do the dirty job. clean and cut fish. this fish was so heavy that Isaiah and I barely got it up on the table. estimated weight was #140lbs. or 63 kilos. but i think it was actually more, but who cares?

give a kid a fish, he will eat for one day.
teach a kid to fish, he will eat forever.
today was a really big day for this kid.

even though Isaiah is a man, i still think of him as my little cute nephew. always clowning around and always smiling.
today i officially checked “catching a tuna” off my bucket list.
my ahi fever is gone. people get hooked, not me.
i’m satisfied, and i’m looking forward to sleeping well again.
next for me is “japan fever” and that’s all i have in my mind. see you there.

i was watching the UFC 189 and thinking to myself, “wow, it’s amazing how everybody is just beating up everybody. this can’t be good for the brain right?” these fighters fight, then go straight to the hospital. that’s crazy!

but ended up surfing because i need to release stress, not build up more. one duck dive, one take off, and one off the lip is all i need to have a wonderful day.
